The Sumner Presbyterian Church, located in Tallahatchie County, has been supporting the Quitman County Food Pantry since 2020. The Food Pantry is located in the Trinity Community Center at 417 10th St (Hwy 3) in Lambert, MS. It serves qualified residents of Quitman County, which is adjacent to Tallahatchie County.
There are four distribution days every other month. Approximately two hundred boxes, each containing twenty to twenty-five items, are given out on each distribution day. Each of the boxes is identical or as equivalent as possible.
Most of the food is purchased from Mid-South Food Bank in Memphis. Some also comes from USDA and, occasionally, from other donors.
The big advantage of having an official food pantry is that it can purchase food for less than grocery store prices. However, the cost of purchasing and shipping the canned and staple foods has now almost doubled since 2014. Also, the availability of food has been greatly reduced.
Sumner Presbyterian Church has applied for and received grants from St. Andrew Presbytery to help the Food Pantry in their quest to provide nutritious food to be distributed.
